The tricky balance of safety and sanity is something parents have been dealing with since the first family road trips in the days of the Model-T Ford. Food fights, screaming matches, toy stealing: the anarchy that kids can create in the back seat has forced almost every parent to occasionally divert their attention – and, by extension, their eyes – from the road.
Magna International Inc. has introduced a ground-breaking video-based child monitoring system, which allows drivers to see the backseat area, and their children, without turning their head.
Based on Magna’s EYERIS® camera technologies, the system works by placing a digital, megapixel camera over the rear seat, which allows parents or caregivers a clear, undistorted view of their chiland is even effective while driving at night. The camera is equipped with an infrared LED light, so parents can see their children on-screen in dark conditions.
It’s a significant step in making a safer - and saner - family driving experience.
“The in-cabin child-monitoring feature is a great example of how Magna applies technology to meet the needs of specific lifestyles and vehicles – in this case, it’s families with children and minivans,” said Swamy Kotagiri, Magna’s Chief Technology Officer and President of Magna Electronics.
It’s this combination of technological innovation and user insight that keep Magna ahead of the curve, consistently making cars safer for drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
The child-monitoring system debuted to acclaim in Detroit at the 2017 North American International Auto Show on the 2018 Honda Odyssey. It’s the latest in the long line of Magna’s innovative camera-based driver assist technologies - an area the company has been leading for 25 years. Other pioneering products have included rearview, side-view and front-facing cameras that support features such as adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking, 360-degree bird's-eye view and automatic emergency braking.

While kids will continue to be kids, and wreak havoc just out of mom and dad’s reach, with Magna’s child-monitoring system parents can start their family drive with less worry, knowing their trip is a little safer.
And Magna isn’t stopping there. Kotagiri sees many opportunities for the company going forward: “with today’s drivers facing more distractions than ever, our goal is to continue to develop new driver-assistance features to enhance vehicle functionality, improve safety and provide peace of mind.”
