News Release - Magna Innovation Process Recognized with Award in China

Shanghai, China, September 29, 2016 – Magna’s innovative manufacturing process for front end modules (FEMs) at its exteriors Guangneng joint-venture plant in Hangzhou, China was recognized Sept. 23 by Automobile & Parts magazine. The Chinese magazine honored Magna with an Industry Developing & Innovation Technology Award at a ceremony in Shanghai where General Manager of Magna Guangneng Automotive Simon Jiang, Vice President of Operations for China Todd Fortner and Vice President of Sales for Asia Nicholas Morgan accepted.

Magna’s manufacturing execution strategy (MES) allows it to build two unique products, Ford Taurus and Ford Edge FEMs, on the same line with world-class fit and finish. The line uses carousel manufacturing cells to allow for volume flexibility based on customer needs. Magna’s MES uses advanced code to ensure proper sequencing along with real-time process monitoring. This innovative production line also allows for in-process headlamp fixture setting, with 100 percent statistical process-control checks, that adjusts in real time on every FEM for perfect vehicle fit.

The trigger for developing this approach was that Magna needed to produce two unique FEMs while maximizing the use of valuable plant floor space. “We saw increased efficiency and cost savings and were able to deliver high-quality products to our customer exactly when they needed them,” said Morgan. “This creative solution is an excellent example of Magna’s ability to truly partner with customers to find innovative, efficient and cost-effective manufacturing processes.”
