A Special Ride for the Environmental Pope

We will build the first all-electric popemobile, a modified Fisker Ocean SUV, at our facility in Europe, another example of Magna’s commitment to supporting sustainable products.

The popemobile is the name given to a one-of-a-kind vehicle used to transport Pope Francis at public events. The special Fisker Ocean will feature a solar roof and an interior with carpets made from recycled plastic bottles recovered from the ocean.

The customized Ocean is a fitting choice for the pontiff who represents the 1.2 billion Roman Catholics in the world. Pope Francis, who issues frequent calls to protect “our common home,” is known as the “environmental pope” and takes his name from St. Francis, the patron saint of the environment.

The Fisker Ocean is set to roll off Magna’s assembly line in November 2022. Fisker Inc. said there are currently more than 16,000 reservation holders for the Ocean. It will be available in premium versions with such features as all- wheel-drive and Ultra High Range (approximately 350 miles).

Expertise in Electric Battery Enclosures

When the 2022 GMC Hummer EV and the all-electric 2022 Ford F150 Lightning pickup truck hit the road, they will be equipped with a key component from Magna – our innovative battery enclosure.

Battery enclosures, which all electric vehicles (EVs) need, house high-voltage batteries, electrical components, sensors, and connectors. They contribute to the safety aspects EVs by protecting critical components from damage, heat, and water.

Each battery enclosure is designed for a specific vehicle since there is no one-size-fits- all solution. It’s another way Magna is creating smart, innovative and responsible products for some of the most exciting vehicles on the market.

Our expertise in this market presents a significant opportunity for Magna because every EV needs one.

Lighting the Way

The next time you’re driving behind the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV, check out the unmistakable rear light design, courtesy of Magna’s first-to-market technology.

The advanced LED structure provides uniformly lit panels that mimic high-end OLED technologies. With Surface Element Lighting technology, Magna is continuing to enable lighting systems to be an integral element of exterior design.

It’s a game-changer in terms of design and customization – and another way Magna is putting its special mark on today’s vehicles.
