Magna's Annual Global Bold Perspective Award Recognizes Student Designer Shaping the Car of the Future

  • Students challenged to present their vision of how the vehicle will look and act in 2035
  • North America finalist Daniel Shapiro from College for Creative Studies claimed top prize
  • Design submissions from North America, Europe and China

AURORA, Ontario, November 17, 2022 – Magna inspires student designers to redefine the look and function of a vehicle as if it was the year 2035, for its 4th annual Magna Global Bold Perspective Award. Daniel Shapiro, from College for Creative Studies in Detroit, was awarded the top prize of $10,000 for his submission titled Right-Sized at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show Forum hosted by Car Design News.

Daniel Shapiro from the College for Creative Studies took home the top award for his well-researched design concept.

Shapiro’s project, “Right-Sized”, addresses the disadvantages of what he believes to be “bulkier” modern vehicles and provides a systematic approach to shaping the car of the future to being smaller, modular and adaptable to various driving situations.

An accomplished panel of design industry leaders judged the 2022 competition, including Crystal Windham of General Motors Design, Jay Shuster of Pixar Animation Studios, Liz Wetzel of Lawrence Technological University, Bjorn Shuster of Harley-Davidson Motor Company, and Magna’s Larry Erickson.

“We created this competition to help us tap into the future of mobility and these concepts propel us into a new world of vehicle design,” said Larry Erickson, Global Director of Design at Magna Exteriors. “This winning design is sleek and enticing, and more importantly, addresses a key industry issue – reducing our carbon footprint.”

“As a mobility tech company, it’s our job to always be the innovator that can solve customer challenges, and our designers and product teams are inspired by these students’ innovative solutions,” said Magna Exteriors President Grahame Burrow. “Magna recognizes the key role Gen Z will play in designing the car of the future and, through this competition, we remain committed to encouraging aspiring designers to re-imagine how people will use their vehicles.”

The Europe region finalist, Benjamin Miller from Royal College of Art in London, impressed the judges with the “Billy” Jeep, a unique outdoor adventure vehicle. Miller was inspired by various features found on early wartime Jeeps, like the removable canopy, chunky dash and easy access at the side of the car.

Xue Liyan, Asia region finalist from Nanjing University of Science and Technology in China, won over the judges with his flying part-vehicle, part-building concept, “Arcto 001”. Liyan aimed to address the rise of urbanization and envisioned a future where city dwellers yearn for more free space and time outdoors. “Arcto 001” is designed to be a “moveable building” that can seamlessly transition from a compact city vehicle to an escape pod that can be used for camping.

Magna created the Global Bold Perspective Award in 2018 to showcase student vehicle designs of the future. The automotive design competition calls for entries from students in North America, Europe and China, who then compete for the top prize in the fall of each year.
