City Delivery Self-Driving Delivery Vehicles

New Mobility Canada Delivery Services Inc., a subsidiary of Magna International Inc. (“City Delivery”), is actively developing technologies and systems for an autonomous future. We have developed the “City Delivery” service to offer enhanced convenience and a more comfortable goods delivery experience with our low speed, self-driving delivery vehicles (SDVs).
Your privacy is a very important topic for us. As our SDVs are recording videos in connection with their operation, if you encounter one of them, it may collect your personal information. This Privacy Notice describes how we process your personal information collected by our SDVs. For more information about our collection and use of information in connection with the City Delivery service, see our City Delivery Privacy Statement.
What personal information do our SDVs collect?
Our SDVs are equipped with various sensors (such as Radars, video cameras and light detection and ranging sensors called LiDAR) that record the surrounding environment. If you are within the surrounding environment of one of our SDVs, the sensors may collect your personal information. The sensor data that is collected includes:
- Video recordings and images, including facial images of individuals in the surrounding areas, vehicles (including vehicle license plates) and other nearby objects,
- Location data, such as the general location of you and other individuals in the surrounding area, and
- Sensor data, including the distance, position and speed of nearby objects and 3D maps of the surrounding areas.
What are the purposes for which the SDV data is used?
We use the information collected through SDVs to safely navigate roads, sidewalks and other pedestrian areas to facilitate accurate, efficient and timely deliveries. We also use sensor data for the following purposes:
- To develop, validate, perform, enhance and improve the efficiency and safety of the SDVs. For example, we use sensor data to recognize traffic signs and identify traffic participants and other objects near a vehicle.
- We use sensor data which shows images of faces to evaluate where a pedestrian intends to walk, such as whether they will cross a crosswalk, and we use that to improve our autonomous driving systems to increase safety.
- Sometimes, a livestream of sensor data will be used so that we can access the SDVs and control them remotely, if necessary.
- The SDVs store video for the purpose of error detection and software improvements. If a robot is damaged, removed from its position or otherwise operated unlawfully, recordings can be saved for evidentiary purposes.
While certain personal information may be recorded and processed, in no instance is it our intention to determine your identity.
Who may received my personal information?
We do not sell personal data. We treat collected data with care. We restrict access to the data internally for the purposes of performing and improving the SDV experience or for safety, development, research, and legal reasons. In certain circumstances, that data will be shared with service providers (e.g. IT service providers, hosting providers, navigational services providers) for the purposes of performing the delivery services. It may also be shared with certain third parties (i.e. insurance providers; law enforcement; and other officials; etc.) where required or permitted by applicable law.
How is your personal data protected?
We have implemented appropriate technical and organizational security measures in accordance with applicable law to protect your data against manipulation, loss, destruction and access by unauthorized persons. We are constantly improving our security measures in line with technological developments.
How long do we keep your personal information?
Your data will be retained as long as necessary in order to (a) develop and validate new technology, including safety and security features for the SDVs; (b) improve the SDV experience, including safety and security features; (c) verify software or hardware updates; (d) resolve any legal disputes, and (e) allow us to meet our legal requirements around retaining records in accordance with established retention periods and policy. When we no longer need to use your personal information to comply with contractual, statutory, regulatory, or other legal obligations, we will remove it from our systems, and/or take steps to properly anonymize or de-identify it so that individuals can no longer be identified from it.
