News Release - Magna Highlights Automotive Technologies for Today and for the Car of the Future

Two-day media event to showcase products and systems which are Smarter, Cleaner, Safer and Lighter

SAILAUF, Germany, June 22, 2016 – Magna isn’t just making vehicle systems – we are helping drive future mobility. As the only supplier in the world that can approach a vehicle holistically with broad capabilities, electronics integration expertise and complete-vehicle engineering and assembly, Magna is poised to help automakers keep pace with the accelerated changes in the industry. To share some of the company’s latest technologies addressing industry trends and challenges, Magna is hosting Media Innovation Days on June 22nd and 23th in Sailauf and Bad Homburg.

Gerd Brusius, Vice President Sales & Marketing for Magna in Europe, explains: “We are continuously increasing our investment in innovation to remain at the forefront of the industry. Our innovative thinking and world-class manufacturing are what have made Magna one of the strongest suppliers in the industry today, and that is what will allow us to continue to deliver superior value to our customers.”

“The automobile is becoming far more than just a means of transportation. As global megatrends over the next 25 years drive our innovation and development activities, it is critical that we continue to leverage our ability to look at vehicles holistically and deliver solutions that are Smarter, Cleaner, Safer, Lighter and affordable to the market,” said Swamy Kotagiri, Magna Chief Technology Officer.

Smarter
Smarter technologies give consumers a better overall driving experience in terms of comfort, convenience and connectivity. Consistent with the industry of replacing mechanical with electronic devices, Magna is developing unique electronic systems for its customers such as SmartLatch™. This new paradigm for side-door latches operates 100% electronically, with no cables, rods or moving handles. The industry-first application of SmartLatch was on the BMW i8, and this year it received an Automotive News PACE Award as a leading supplier innovation.

Key benefits to automakers include significant weight savings compared to mechanical latches, a reduced number of components, the flexibility to be used in any type of car or truck, as well as improved safety, sound quality and vehicle styling. For the consumer this system provides seamless entry and best-in-class comfort.

Cleaner
We aim to minimize the environmental footprint of our practices, process and products. Magna’s Flex4™ all-wheel drive powertrain disconnect system, for example, increases the fuel efficiency of AWD vehicles and optimizes vehicle safety, traction and dynamics by automatically disconnecting the AWD system from the drivetrain and reconnecting within milliseconds only when required.

Safer
As the industry shifts from passive to more active safety, the end goal is to get to zero: zero collisions, zero accidents, zero injuries. Magna is leading the way by leveraging its leadership position in camera technology, as well as by developing adaptable systems that can be used in senor-fusion applications. For instance, Magna’s EYERISTM Generation 3.0 front camera system features exceptional resolution and field-of-view, and integrates with vehicle radar to perform functions like lane keeping, automatic high beam, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and more.

Lighter
From advanced and ultra-high strength steels, to thin seats to multi-material structural systems, Magna’s lightweighting approach is an enabler of achieving better fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. A few examples include:
 Body and chassis high pressure die-cast components
 Carbon-fiber hoods
 Optimized powertrains, and
 Active aerodynamic systems that reduce drag.

Magna will support the launch of 285 vehicles globally from 2016-2018, which is 66 percent of the overall industry release. The company’s innovative technologies found on many of these launches will be on display at Magna’s Media Innovation Day June 22-23.
