Magna Software Engineer – and Convincing Recruiter

Head shot Lukas Ferenc

Lukáš Ferenc’s classmates in the software engineering program at the Technical University of Košice, Slovakia were eager to hear about his job at Magna’s new electronics plant in nearby Kechnec during a recent get-together.

“I told them everything I was learning in school suddenly made more sense because I was putting it into practice at Magna,” said Ferenc, a part-time test engineer who is finishing a five-year program that culminates in a master’s degree. “I feel lucky to be employed here and be part of the growth of the company. It’s a great experience.”

Even as a college student, Ferenc’s job duties have expanded beyond Slovakia, with a business trip to a Magna facility in Tiengen, Germany. Most importantly, Ferenc was offered a full-time position at the division upon graduation.

I didn't hesitate to say 'yes,'" he said.

Following His Footsteps

The glowing review of his Magna experience made a big impact on his college friends.

A short time later, five of them joined Magna in software engineering roles. Today, they often pile into Ferenc’s car, a 1992 Skoda Forman he rebuilt in his spare time, and commute to work together.

When Ferenc started working as a programmer at Magna in June 2022, he wore a hard hat to the brownfield plant as it was undergoing renovation.

He was promoted to his current job in February and works 20 hours a week testing printed circuit boards for engines and cameras for advanced driver assistance systems.

College Thesis

It turns out his job is a perfect complement to his studies. Ferenc’s college thesis focuses on automotive cameras, how they work and how to calibrate them. In addition, Magna’s core values – most notably “take responsibility” – align nicely with his personal approach to work.

“Whether I was working at my first big job at a bicycle repair shop or here at Magna, I take responsibility for my work,” he explained. “If something goes wrong, I try to fix it. It’s a basic principle of mine.”

A Family Tradition

For someone who says he was “born into computers,” Magna is a natural fit.

“My father is a software engineer and my brothers are programmers,” Ferenc said. “I started playing simple computer games when I was six. Now, I’m intrigued by electronics, hybrids and EVs – everything automotive. This is my dream job.”
